Place Value
When a number is written out in digits, each number has a different value depending on what position it is in.

Hundreds
- The number 1 stands for 100 since it is in the hundreds place.

Tens of thousands
- The number 4 stands for 40,000 since it is in the tens of thousands place.

Hundreds of thousands
- The number 3 stands for 300,000 since it is in the hundreds of thousands place.
Negative Numbers
Negative numbers are shown with a minus sign in front (e.g. −4). Negative numbers are smaller than positive numbers.

Number line
- The number line above shows the first 3 negative and positive numbers.
- The positive numbers are all larger than the negative numbers.
- 0 is called the origin and is not negative or positive.

Multiplying negative numbers
- When multiplying a negative number by another negative number, the negatives cancel out and the result is positive.
