  • −11,000, −34, −3, 0, 1, 57 and 100,000 are all integers.
  • −34.1, −13\large \frac{1}{3}, 0.5, 1.1, 457\large \frac{45}{7} and 57.76 are all non-integers.

Place Value

When a number is written out in digits, each number has a different value depending on what position it is in.

  • The number 1 stands for 100 since it is in the hundreds place.

  • The number 4 stands for 40,000 since it is in the tens of thousands place.

Negative Numbers

Negative numbers are shown with a minus sign in front (e.g. −4). Negative numbers are smaller than positive numbers.

  • 0 is called the origin and is not negative or positive.
