Devices used to make measurements have a scale which tells you the precision of a measurement made with the device.

Ruler

Rulers measure length.
A standard classroom ruler has a scale of 1 mm, as that is the smallest amount you can measure.

Scales

Scales measure the mass of objects.
A typical set of kitchen scales has a scale of 0.1 g.

Thermometer

Thermometers measure temperature.
A standard thermometer has a scale of 1°C.

Measuring cylinder

Measuring cylinders measure the volume of substances.
The scale of a measuring cylinder depends on the amount of substance it can hold.
Common scales for measuring cylinders are 1 ml, 2 ml, 5 ml, 10 ml and 50 ml.
