Multiplying Decimals

We multiply decimals using two simple steps:

  • To multiply decimals together first multiply the digits together ignoring the decimal point.
Step 2

  • Then add in the decimal point.
  • There will be as many decimal places as the two numbers combined.

Dividing Decimals

You should be able to divide decimals without using a calculator.

  • First, write down the calculation in a long division equation.

  • Move the decimal point two digits to the right (multiply by 100).
  • This gets rid of the decimals and lets us work with whole numbers.

  • Calculate the quotient.

  • A recurring decimal has a pattern of numbers that repeats forever.
Notation

Notation

  • A dot is written above the digit that repeats.
  • If there is more than one digit in the repeating pattern then one dot will be written above the first digit of the pattern and one above the final digit of the pattern.
