Types of Intermolecular Forces

Intermolecular forces operate between all types of molecules and are much weaker than intramolecular forces. We shall look at three types of intermolecular forces:

Illustrative background for London dispersion forcesIllustrative background for London dispersion forces ?? "content

London dispersion forces

  • These are the weakest intermolecular interactions we shall consider.
Illustrative background for Permanent dipole-dipole interactionsIllustrative background for Permanent dipole-dipole interactions ?? "content

Permanent dipole-dipole interactions

  • These are stronger than London dispersion forces but weaker than hydrogen bonds.
Illustrative background for Ion-dipole interactionsIllustrative background for Ion-dipole interactions ?? "content

Ion-dipole interactions

  • These are present between ions and polar molecules.
    • They tend to be stronger than dipole-dipole interactions.
Illustrative background for Hydrogen bondsIllustrative background for Hydrogen bonds ?? "content

Hydrogen bonds

  • These are the strongest form of intermolecular forces we shall consider.
  • They are still much weaker than intramolecular forces (e.g. covalent bonds).
