- The sand particles will not pass through the small holes in the filter paper.
- Only the water solvent will pass through the filter paper.
Sand residue is left on the filter paper.
- Water passes through as the filtrate.

Filtering sand from saltwater

You can get safe water from a mixture of saltwater and sand.
First, filter the mixture.
- Filtering the mixture will separate the insoluble sand from the saltwater.
To get safe water, you need to separate the salt from the water.

Separating salt and water

You can separate salt from water by boiling the water.
- The water will evaporate when boiled.
- The salt will crystallise when the water boils.
Next, condense the water you have boiled.
- The condensed water will be separated from the salt.
- The water will be safe to drink.
