The density of substances in different states is different. Density can be calculated by Mass ÷ Volume.

Density of solids

  • Solid particles are arranged in a fixed position and in layers.
  • Solids generally have a high density.
  • To measure the density of a solid you need to work out its mass using a top pan balance.
  • If it is a regular shaped object to work out the volume you need to do length x width x height
  • If the object is irregular then you can use a displacement or eureka can to measure its volume.

Density of liquids

  • Liquid particles are free to move around and are not arranged in layers or a fixed position.
  • Liquid densities are usually less than when they are in solid form.
  • Water is unusual because its liquid density is more than when it is a solid.
  • You can measure the volume of a liquid using a measuring cylinder.
  • You can use a top pan balance to measure the liquids mass.
    • (The mass of the liquid + measuring cylinder) – the mass of the measuring cylinder.
