Reactions of Bases

You need to know how bases react with acids and ammonium salts.

Acids

Acids

  • Bases neutralise acids.
  • It's important that we control how acidic soil is so that plants can grow properly. We can add a suitable base (such as slaked lime) to soil to neutralise soil acidity so that it is the optimum pH for plant growth.
Ammonium salts

Ammonium salts

  • When bases are heated with ammonium salts, they give off ammonia gas.
    • Base + ammonium salt → salt + ammonia + water
