Demonstratives as Pronouns

These pronouns are used to replace the noun that is being spoken about. This and these are used when speaking about people and things that are near to the person speaking. That and those are used to talk about far away things and people. There are three types:

Este - this one, these ones

  • 'Este' is used to replace nouns that are close to the person who is speaking and the person who is listening.
    • Masculine singular → este (this).
    • Masculine plural→ estos (these).
    • Feminine singular → esta (this).
    • Feminine plural → estas (these).

Ese - that one, those ones

  • 'Ese' is used to replace nouns that are not easily within reach of the person who is speaking, but is closer to the person who is listening.
    • Masculine singular → ese (that one).
    • Masculine plural → esos (that one).
    • Femine singular → esa (those ones).
    • Feminine plural → esas (those ones).

  • Aquel is used to replace nouns that are far away from both the person who is speaking and the person who is listening.
    • Masculine singular → aquel (that one).

    • Feminine singular→ aquella (that one).
    • Feminine plural → aquellas (those ones).
