This, These, That and Those

These are words that show the person or thing that is being spoken about. This and these are used when speaking about people and things that are near to the person speaking. That are those are used to talk about far away things and people. There are three types:

Este - this, these

Este - this, these

  • 'Este' is used to talk about objects that are close to the person who is speaking and the person who is listening.
    • Masculine singular → este (this).
    • Masculine plural → estos (these).
    • Feminine singular → esta (this).
    • Feminine plural → estas (these).
Ese - that, those

Ese - that, those

  • 'Ese' is used to talk about objects that are not easily within reach of the person who is speaking, but are closer to the person who is listening.
    • Masculine singular → ese (that).
    • Masculine plural → esos (those).
    • Feminine singular → esa (that).
    • Feminine plural → esas (those).
Aquel - that, those (over there)

Aquel - that, those (over there)

  • Aquel is used for objects that are far away from both the person who is speaking and the person who is listening.
    • Masculine singular → aquel (that).
    • Masculine plural → aquellos (those).
    • Feminine singular → aquella (that).
    • Feminine plural → aquellas (those).
