Spelling Changes 'GIR' → 'J'

IR verbs that end in 'gir' require a spelling change to be consistent in pronunciation. These verbs change their spelling to preserve the 'x' or 'h' sound. The 'g' changes to a 'j'. Here are some examples:

'Corregir'

'Corregir'

  • 'Corregir' changes the ‘g’ for a ‘j’ and also changes its ‘e’ for an ‘I’ in the present tense, and so continues this for the subjunctive.
  • Corrija - I correct.
  • Corrijas - you correct.
  • Corrija - he/she corrects.
  • Corrijamos - we correct.
  • Corrijáis - you correct.
  • Corrijan - they correct.
'Elegir'

'Elegir'

  • 'Elegir' changes the ‘g’ for a ‘j’ and also changes its ‘e’ for an ‘I’ in the present tense, and so continues this for the subjunctive.
  • Elija - I choose.
  • Elijas - you choose.
  • Elija - he/she chooses.
  • Elijamos - we choose.
  • Elijáis - you choose.
  • Elijan - they choose.

Spelling Changes 'GUIR' - 'G'

IR verbs that end in 'guir' change their spelling to be consistent in pronunciation. These verbs change their spelling to preserve the 'g' sound. They won't need the ‘gu’, only the ‘g’.

'Ir'

'Ir' has a completely irregular stem for the present subjunctive. You only need to use the stem ‘vay’ and add the ‘ir’ subjunctive endings.
