Changes in the law
Changes in the law
- Divorce Reform Act 1969 made divorces easier to get. People could now “divorce over the counter”.
- Equal Pay Act 1970 helped to close the gender pay gap.
- Marriage Act 2013 gave same-sex couples the possibility of getting married in England and Wales.
Changes in gender roles
Changes in gender roles
- Women nowadays tend to prioritise their education and career over starting a family.
- Women want to be more financially independent so they are even able to start families on their own.
Benefits for single parents
Benefits for single parents
- Government support is available to lone parents. This means that someone in an unhappy relationship now has the financial means to leave the relationship.

Employment opportunities
Employment opportunities
- Feminist movements have helped women to have a better chance of getting a good job and provide for themselves and their children.
Longer life expectancy
Longer life expectancy
- Thanks to better healthcare and welfare state, the life expectancy has increased which gives more time to people to move in and out of different relationships.
Religion/secularisation decline
Religion/secularisation decline
- The decline in religion/secularisation means that marriage isn't viewed as being as sacred as it used to be.
- This means that new family types such as the lone parent family are now seen as being more socially acceptable.
Migration
Migration
- Migration to the UK has brought family traditions from other cultures.
- This increased cultural mix leads to a deviation from the traditional nuclear family norm.
