Uses of 'Estar'

The verb 'estar' in Spanish has many different uses. For example, we use 'estar' to talk about location, mood, or consequences.

Location

'Estar' is used to say where something is.
¿Dónde están las llaves?
- Where are the keys?
Madrid está en España.
- Madrid is in Spain.

Mood

'Estar’ describes a physical or emotional state.
Theo está feliz.
- Theo is happy.
Estoy bien.
- I am OK.

Consequences

We use ‘estar’ to say how people or things are now because of what has happened.
- 'Estar' indicates a state resulting from a process/action.
La puerta está abierta porque la abrí yo.
- The door is open because I opened it.
