Gases

Gases are one of the main three states of matter. They are useful because their properties mean they can be stored under pressure.

Particle arrangement

Particle arrangement

  • Particles in gases are not close together.
  • They are far apart from each other because the forces between the particles are very weak.
  • They can be compressed.
Movement

Movement

  • The movement of the particles is totally random.
  • Particles in gases have lots of energy and so move quickly.
  • Gases will completely fill their container.
Density

Density

  • Gases are not very dense because of the large spaces between the particles.
Temperature

Temperature

  • If you increase the temperature, particles will gain more energy.
  • As their energy increases, the particles will move faster and faster.
  • In a gas, this will increase the pressure because the particles will hit the wall of their container more often.
