Respiration

Respiration is the process by which we free the chemical energy stored in the food we eat so that we can use it for life processes such as movement, growth or repair.

Types of respiration

Types of respiration

  • There are two different forms of respiration:
    • Aerobic (this uses oxygen).
    • Anaerobic (this doesn't use oxygen).
  • Anaerobic respiration is different in different organisms. We can exploit this quality when it comes to making bread or alcohol.

  • Aerobic respiration is how living things usually release the energy they need to survive.
  • The equation for aerobic respiration is:
    • Oxygen + glucose → water + carbon dioxide.
Anaerobic respiration

Anaerobic respiration

  • When there is plenty of oxygen, living things can respire aerobically (that just means with oxygen).
  • But if there is limited oxygen, then a new form of respiration must be used. This is called anaerobic respiration.

Anaerobic respiration in animals

  • The equation for anaerobic respiration is:
    • Glucose → lactic acid.
  • This lactic acid must be broken down afterwards. This is why you continue to breathe heavily after you have finished strenuous activity.
    • You breathe heavily because the lactic acid needs oxygen to be broken down.
  • You are said to be repaying your oxygen debt.
