Lenses are transparent and all light needs to be focused to form an image.

Convex lenses

  • A convex lens is like the lens that you find in your eye.
  • It is also called a converging lens.
  • It is larger in the middle than on the top and bottom. It focuses light at the focal point.
  • Glasses with convex lenses are used to aid people who are long sighted.
  • Convex lenses are also used in magnifying glasses and cameras.

  • A concave lens is also called a diverging lens.
  • It is thinner in the middle and slightly bigger on the top and bottom.
  • Glasses with concave lenses are used to aid people who are short sighted.

If light waves change speed when they pass through different mediums (such as the boundary between air and plastic) they refract.

  • As light travels between two different mediums (such as air and plastic and glass) it will refract.
  • As light enters glass or plastic, it will slow down and so change direction.
  • As the light slows down, it will bend towards the normal.
Uses of refraction

Uses of refraction

  • As light enters the eye, the cornea and the lens refract light so an image will form on the retina.
  • A prism will refract light to form a spectrum of colours.
    • This is called dispersion.
  • The archer fish spits water at its prey, accounting for refraction at the boundary between air and water.
