The female reproductive system is made up of several parts.

  • Ovary - this is the organ that produces egg cells as well as oestrogen.
  • Fallopian tube or oviduct - this tube is where fertilisation takes place. Cells in the fallopian tube transport the egg to the uterus.
  • Uterus or womb - this is where, if fertilisation has happened, the egg is implanted to develop further.
    • It is lined by endometrium. The endometrium thickens during the second half of the menstrual cycle and breaks down with bleeding (a period), when the female is not pregnant.

  • Cervix - This is the opening to the uterus. It is made of muscular tissue.
  • Vagina - This is the opening of the reproductive organs, where the male's penis goes during sexual intercourse.
