OD & OI Pronouns: Combination

The DO & IO pronouns are used to replace the direct and indirect objects in a sentence, respectively. They can be used simultaneously in the same sentence.

Use

Use

  • Direct object pronouns (DO) can replace both people and things.
  • They are always used with transitive verbs.
  • Indirect object pronouns (IO) can only replace people.
Combination

Combination

  • In French, several pronouns can be combined within the same sentence.
  • We use the following order of pronoun placement in this case:
    • First, IO pronouns: me, te, nous, vous
    • Second, DO pronouns: le, la, and les
    • Third, IO pronouns: lui and leur

  • They are placed between the subject and the verb.
  • J'ai envoyé un message à tes parents.
    • I have sent a message to your parents.
  • Je le leur ai envoyé.
    • Yo se lo he enviado.
