Direct Object Pronouns: Le, La, Les, L'

The direct object pronouns le, la, l’ and les are used to replace the direct object (DO) of the 3rd person singular or plural in a sentence.

  • Verbs with avoir in the past tense do not agree:
  • J'ai mangé la pomme.
    • I have eaten the apple.

Verb agreement

  • However, when we put a direct object pronoun, it agrees in gender and number with the verb that follows.
  • Je l'ai mangée.
    • We add the '-e' for feminine agreement.

    • I have eaten the apple.
  • Je l'ai mangée.
    • I have eaten it.
  • La pomme is feminine, so it agrees with mangée (doble '-e').
