Direct Object Pronouns: Le, La, Les, L'

The direct object pronouns le, la, l’ and les are used to replace the direct object (DO) of the 3rd person singular or plural in a sentence.

Singular direct object pronouns

Singular direct object pronouns

  • Le replaces masculine nouns in the singular.
  • La replaces feminine nouns in the singular.
  • L' replaces feminine or masculine nouns when the word begins with a vowel.

  • Les replaces masculine and feminine nouns in the plural.
Identification

Identification

  • To identify it, we ask the verb 'what?'.
  • We distinguish whether it is a masculine, feminine, singular, or plural word.
  • We replace the word with the pronoun:
    • before the verb
    • between ne and pas in negative sentences
