Kingdoms

At the broadest level, organisms can be classified into 5 kingdoms; animals, plants, fungi, prokaryotes and protoctista.

Animals

Animals

  • Animal cells have no cell wall and no chloroplasts (so do not carry out photosynthesis).
  • Animals are multicellular (made of many cells) and they are heterotrophs (don't make their own food).
  • Whales and worms are examples.
Plants

Plants

  • Plant cells are surrounded by cell walls (made of a substance called cellulose) and contain chloroplasts (carry out photosynthesis).
  • Some plants are multicellular (many cells) and some are unicellular (single-celled), and they are all autotrophs (make their own food).
  • Daisies and algae are examples.
