Monitoring Heart Rate

Heart rate can be measured in different ways:

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Sensors are attached to the skin to detect the electrical signals made when the heart beats.

Pulse rate

‘Pulse points’ at the wrist and neck are where the flow of blood can be felt passing through an artery.

Stethoscope

When a stethoscope is put to someone's chest, the valves of the heart can be heard as they open and close.
