God as Creator
According to the first 2 chapters of the Torah, God made everything. Everything exists because God wanted it to be. There is no force equal to God, and no devil fighting against God. Both good and evil come from God.

Literal interpretation
Some Jews believe the creation story in Genesis 1 should be taken literally.
These Jews believe the universe was created in 6 consecutive 24-hour days.
This would mean the world is 5784 years old (as of 2024).
However, many Jews agree the world is much older and accept the scientific theory of evolution.

Religion and science
Some Jews believe God is the creator the world, but the Torah should not be taken literally.
Former Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks, said science explains how the world was made, and religion explains why.
Because of this, there is no conflict between religion and science.

Shabbat and respect
Shabbat is Judaism's day of rest, the 7th day of the week.
When Jews celebrate Shabbat, they remember how God stopped creating on the 7th day.
Shabbat is a weekly reminder of God as Creator.
Jews have laws against pollution and harming the world. The world must be treated with care and respect because God created it. Respecting the world is respecting God.
