The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta

The First Noble Truth, the Dhukkha, is the first teaching of Siddatha Gautama after he reached enlightenment.

Dukkha

Dukkha

  • Dukkha is often translated as 'suffering', or anxiety/distress, of which there are three types found in scriptures:
    • Dukkha-dukkha, which are painful experiences such as birth, ageing, illness and death.
    • Viparinama-dukkha are pleasant experiences which change to be unpleasant.
  • Sankhara-dukkha is the unsatisfactoriness which pervades all existence and forms of life, because life is impermanent.

Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta

  • 'Now this, bhikkhus, is the noble truth of suffering: birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering; in brief, the five aggregates subject to clinging are suffering.'(Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta)
