Genetics and Common Ancestry
Living organisms are linked by descent from common ancestors. Genetics support the concept of common ancestry between organisms.

DNA, RNA, and ribosomes
DNA, RNA, and ribosomes
- The Central Dogma describes the normal flow of genetic information from DNA to mRNA to protein: DNA in genes specify sequences of mRNA which, in turn, specify amino acid sequences in proteins.
- The genetic code is used to convert a nucleotide sequence into an amino acid sequence.
- DNA, RNA, and ribosomes are found in all forms of life and the major features of this Central Dogma are shared by all living organisms.
- This supports the theory of common ancestry between living organisms.

Metabolic pathways
Metabolic pathways
- Researchers have found that all branches of life share some of the same metabolic pathways.
- This suggests that all organisms evolved from the same ancient common ancestor.
- Evidence indicates that over time pathways diverged to add specialized enzymes to allow organisms to better adapt to their environment.
- However, the underlying principle remains that all organisms must harvest energy from their environment and convert it to ATP to carry out cellular functions.
