Important Blood Vessels

Biology: Edexcel IGCSE, topic 3.3.26

Important Veins and Arteries

Blood vessels of the heart and lungs:

Vena cava

Vena cava

  • The heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body through a vein called the vena cava.
Pulmonary vein

Pulmonary vein

  • The heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary vein.
Aorta

Aorta

  • The heart pumps out oxygenated blood to the body through the aorta.
Pulmonary artery

Pulmonary artery

  • The heart pumps out deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery.
Coronary arteries

Coronary arteries

  • The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygenated blood.

Important Veins and Arteries

Major blood vessels of the liver and kidneys:

Renal artery

Renal artery

  • Blood arrives at the kidneys to be filtered through the renal artery.
Renal vein

Renal vein

  • Filtered blood leaves the kidneys through the renal vein.
Hepatic artery

Hepatic artery

  • Supplies oxygenated blood to the liver.
Hepatic portal vein

Hepatic portal vein

  • Brings nutrient-rich blood from the gut to the liver.
Hepatic vein

Hepatic vein

  • Takes deoxygenated blood away from the liver, back to the heart.

Test yourself on Important Blood Vessels

  • Which blood vessels take blood away from the heart?

  • Which blood vessel supplies the heart with oxygenated blood?

  • The left atrium of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through which blood vessel?
