Strong Preterite Root Vowel Changes to 'U'

Strong preterites are verbs that differ from general rules but still follow a pattern. These verbs change their root vowel to a 'u'.

Poder - to be able to

Pude - I was able to.
Pudiste - you were able to.
Pudo - he/she was able to.
Pudimos - we were able to.
Pudisteis - you were able to.
Pudieron - they were able to.

Poner - to put

Puse - I put.
Pusiste - you put.
Puso - he/she put.
Pusimos - we put.
Pusisteis - you put.
Pusieron - they put.
- For poner, the stem 'pon' becomes 'pus'.

Saber - to know

Supe - I knew.
Supiste - you knew.
Supo - he/she knew.
Supimos - we knew.
Supisteis - you knew.
Supieron - they knew.
- For saber, the stem 'sab' becomes 'sup'.

Some strong preterite verbs change their root vowel to an 'i'.

Hacer - to do

Hice - I did.
Hiciste - you did.
Hizo - he/she did.
Hicimos - we did.
Hicisteis - you did.
Hicieron - they did.

Querer - to want

Quise - I wanted.
Quisiste - you wanted.
Quiso - he/she wanted.
Quisimos - we wanted.
Quisisteis - you wanted.
Quisieron - they wanted.

Strong Preterites - Adding a 'J' to the Stem

Strong preterites are verbs that differ from general rules but still follow a pattern. 'Traer' (to bring) adds a 'j' to its stem.
