Using 'tener'

You use 'tener' to talk about having a partner.
- ¿Tienes una mujer?
  - Do you have a wife?
- Si, tengo una mujer.
  - Yes I have a wife.
- Mi hermana tiene un novio.
  - My sister has a boyfriend.

Using 'ser'

For the words which talk about if you are in a relationship, you need to use 'ser'.
- Olivia es soltera.
  - Olivia is single.
- Mi abuelo es viudo.
  - My grandfather is a widower.

'Estar enamorado(a) de'

This is how you say that you are in love with someone.
- Estoy enamorado de mi novia.
  - I am in love with my girlfriend.
- Su madre está enamorada de su padre.
  - His mum is in love with his dad.

Comprometerse - to get engaged

Hoy mi mejor amigo y su novia se comprometen.
- Today my best friend and his girlfriend get engaged.
