Victory at the Battle of Plassey forced the Mughal Emperor to negotiate with Robert Clive of the East India Company in the Treaty of Allahabad.

  • In this treaty, the Mughal Emperor agreed to grant the East India Company official rule over the province of Bengal.
  • It also made Clive the Governor of Bengal.

  • The East India Company were now able to tax the population of Bengal, which numbered around 20 million, and make even greater profits than they had been able to through trade.
Significance

Significance

  • The treaty was very significant because it transformed the East India Company from traders in Bengal to its rulers.
  • This laid the foundation for the East India Company to gain more and more power in India.
  • By 1815, the East India Company controlled huge portions of India, and roughly 40 million Indians lived under British rule and paid taxes to the British Empire.
