  • In 1201 AD, the lords of Lusignan rebelled against King John. The rebels were supported by King Philip of France.
  • In 1202 AD, King Philip of France invaded Normandy (in France) and attacked the English.

  • In response, King John launched a campaign to conquer Normandy.
  • King John funded this by taxing his noblemen. This was a very unpopular move.
  • King John’s military campaign was unsuccessful. In 1214 AD, King John lost the Battle of Bouvines.

  • As a result, King John had to pay 20,000 marks and was forced to give lands to King Philip of France. King Philip also demanded that he should be named Richard I’s heir.
