A wave of new inventions in the later half of the 1700s allowed Britain to begin producing cotton on a huge scale and export this abroad for hefty profits.

  • Bear in mind that all these inventions happened in quick succession, as one invention rapidly inspired another, and machines were swiftly made more efficient over a few decades.
The cotton industry

The cotton industry

  • Within the space of a few decades, the cotton industry was transformed.
  • Cotton was no longer produced in small quantities, by hand.
  • It could now be produced in much larger quantities and much more quickly, with a cotton worker overseeing the work done by a machine, rather than doing the work themselves!
