D-Day

  • In June 1944 AD the Allies invaded Normandy in France.
  • They liberated (freed) France from German control and forced the Germans to retreat.
The Soviet Invasion of Berlin

The Soviet Invasion of Berlin

  • Eventually, the Nazis retreated back to Germany.
  • The Soviet Union was conquering Germany from the east, with the Allies bombing key industrial cities in Germany.
  • In mid-April 1945 AD the Soviet Union invaded Berlin.
  • On the 30th of April 1945 AD, Hitler committed suicide.

  • On the 8th of May 1945 AD, Germany surrendered to the Allies.
Japan surrender

Japan surrender

  • In May 1945 AD, the Japanese had still not surrendered.
  • The United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan to force its surrender, but the consequences on human life were catastrophic.
    • One atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 AD.
    • One atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945 AD.
  • This led to Japan surrendering on 15 August 1945 AD.
  • The two atomic bombs killed up to 210,000 people, most of whom were civilians.
