Bilateral aid

  • Tied aid is also called bilateral aid. A country receiving bilateral aid has to do something in return (sometimes this can be used to hide illegal activity).
  • In 2002, the UK made tied aid illegal.
  • In the 1990s, the UK gave Malaysia money for a hydroelectric dam and then Malaysia bought $1bn of arms and munitions from UK businesses.

Voluntary aid

  • Voluntary aid is usually given by NGOs or charities like UNICEF, Save the Children or Oxfam.
  • Short-term aid is meant to deal with emergencies. The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake led India to offer short-term aid to its neighbours, Pakistan. Long-term aid is meant to help a country's development.
