Energy and Sustainability

Energy consumption in Bangladesh has been increasing year on year. This has caused issues that are now being tackled by the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).

Carbon dioxide emissions

Since 1980, carbon dioxide emissions in Bangladesh has increased year on year.
- Emissions of this gas have risen from less than 10 million tonnes in 1980 to over 70 million tonnes in 2014.

Energy consumption

In 2014, Bangladesh had a positive electricity production vs consumption.
- They produced 55 billion kWh but only used 48 billion kWh.
Since 1971, energy use per capita has increased from 85 kilograms of oil equivalent to 222 kilograms in 2014.

SREDA

To improve energy security in the future the government has implemented a new initiative to promote the development of renewable energy.
- This initiative is called the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).

Renewables

The contribution of energy generation from renewables is less than 2% of total energy production.
- This is mainly produced by solar power.

Solar and wind farms

The number of solar farms and wind farms is continuing to rise.
This will see the contribution made by renewable energy sources continue to increase in the future.
