Transport

Transport is more reliable and faster in the present-day because of modern technology.

Air travel

Air travel

  • Air travel means that a fresh and constant supply of goods (e.g. fruit) can be brought in from across the world.
  • Because aeroplanes can make international flights from regional airports, places other than capital cities are easily accessible for business and tourism purposes.
    • For example, you can fly internationally from Birmingham Airport, and East Midlands Airport, rather than just from London Heathrow.
  • Budget airlines make flights affordable to lots of people and markets.
Containerisation

Containerisation

  • Containerisation refers to ships and lorries working together to move goods around.
  • Containerisation means the use of large boxes (called containers) that can be put on heavy goods vehicles, freight trains or ships using cranes.
  • Containers have standard sizes, and are filled with goods and transported by road or rail from the factory to a ship.
  • The ship can transport up to 21,000 containers at a time from multiple factories.
Cars, trains and roads

Cars, trains and roads

  • There are more cars per household in richer societies, especially in middle class families where there are often two or more cars for each family.
  • High-speed trains now make transport easier.
    • For example, France’s TGV.
    • Japan’s Shinkansen (or “bullet train”), which can travel at speeds up to 320 km/h.
  • Roads and motorways make travel between major cities much faster for cars and lorries.
