Characteristics of the Antarctic Ecosystem

The Antarctic ecosystem is located around the South Pole, mainly on the continent of Antarctica and its surrounding ocean. The Antarctic ecosystem has unique features.

Extreme climate conditions

The Antarctic ecosystem experiences the coldest temperatures on Earth, often below -60°C.
The wind speeds can reach over 200 km/h, increasing the harshness of the environment.
Humidity is very low, and precipitation mainly falls as snow, keeping the region dry.
The Antarctic ecosystem has long, dark winters and continuous daylight in summer, affecting living organisms.

Limited biodiversity

The Antarctic ecosystem supports few plant species, mainly mosses, lichens, and algae.
- Animals include penguins, seals, krill, and a few birds, all adapted to the cold.
There is low species diversity due to freezing temperatures and ice coverage.
