Responses to the UK's Ageing Population
There are a number of responses that the UK is using to try and adapt to the ageing population.

Increased funding for medical care
- Older people need more support and medical care.
- Increasing government spending on care homes and healthcare should help the UK deal with an aging population.

Increased pension age
- In 2011, the state pension age rose to 65 from 60.
- The state pension age in 2019 was 65 and this rose to 66 in 2020.
- It will rise again in 2026/27.
- Increasing the state pension age means that people have to work for longer.

Encouraging money saving
- The government has made pensions opt-out, instead of opt-in by default.
- This encourages people to save for their retirement.

Winter fuel allowance
- The Winter Fuel Payment is a payment of £100-£300 to help older people pay for heating in the winter.

Equity release mortgages
- These mortgages allow people to earn money to live or to give to their children without pensioners having to sell the house that they live in until they die.
