Types of Moraine

Moraines are landforms that are left behind after a glacier melts. They are made of till and their position determines which of the four types a particular landform is:

Lateral moraine

Lateral moraine

  • When an extended mound of till is deposited at the edge of a glacier, a lateral moraine is created.
  • A lateral moraine is made up of material from the valley walls.
Medial moraine

Medial moraine

  • When an extended ridge of till is deposited in the middle of a valley, we call it a medial moraine.
  • Medial moraines are formed where 2 glaciers join.
Ground moraine

Ground moraine

  • When till is carried underneath a glacier, a ground moraine is formed.
  • Ground moraines are deposited across the valley floor.
