The Rise of Hitler

Hitler was the leader of the right-wing party, the Nazis. He came to power during the Great Depression when the German population was extremely unhappy with the existing Weimar Government.

The Munich Putsch

Hitler entered politics in the 1920s AD.
He staged a Putsch (uprising) in Munich in 1923 AD. He wanted to overthrow the local government in Munich, Bavaria.
Hitler was unsuccessful but used his trial to give publicity to the Nazi Party and their views.

Mein Kampf

When Hitler was in prison he published his ideas in Mein Kampf. This means 'My Struggle' in German.
The book was a bestseller and Hitler became increasingly popular.

The Great Depression

Germany was damaged by the Great Depression.
Unemployment and poverty affected millions of people.
The Weimar Government struggled to solve the economic crisis.
In elections between 1929 AD and 1933 AD, the German population turned to political extremists (people who hold extreme views), such as the Nazis.

Support for Hitler

Hitler was a strong leader and mesmerising public speaker who travelled the country to give speeches.
The population seemed to want strength in a time of crisis.
Hitler had a flexible message and could appeal to different groups in society.
- He promised to solve the Great Depression for businesses.
- He promised to get jobs for the workers.
- He promised to focus on the family for women.

Hitler becomes Chancellor

The German president, Hindenburg, made Hitler Chancellor in 1933 AD.
Hindenburg believed he could control Hitler. He could not.
