Simple Geometric Progressions

Geometric sequences

Geometric sequences

  • In a geometric sequence, each term is multiplied by the same number to get the next term

  • For example, in the sequence 2,4,8,162, 4, 8, 16, each term is multiplied by 22

Finding the multiplier

Finding the multiplier

  • To find the multiplier, compare one term with the next term

  • For example, in the sequence 3,9,27,813, 9, 27, 81:

  • 3×3=93 \times 3 = 9

  • 9×3=279 \times 3 = 27

  • So the multiplier is 33

Continuing the sequence

Continuing the sequence

  • Once you know the multiplier, use it to find the next term

  • For example, in the sequence 5,10,20,405, 10, 20, 40:

  • The multiplier is 22

  • The next term is 40×2=8040 \times 2 = 80
