Estimating Powers & Roots

We can find the roots and powers that numbers lie between.

Example 1

Example 1

  • Between which consecutive numbers does 14\sqrt{14} lie?
    • Identify the two square numbers on either side of 14\sqrt{14}
    • Find their roots
    • The root of 14\sqrt{14} will lie between these
Example 2

Example 2

  • Between which consecutive square numbers does (4.2)2(4.2)^2 lie?
    • Identify the two numbers on either side of 4.24.2
    • Square these to find what (4.2)2(4.2)^2 will lie between
