Term-to-Term Rules (Patterns)

Patterns have terms

Patterns have terms

  • Each picture in a pattern is called a term

    • Term 1 is the first picture

    • Term 2 is the next picture

    • Term 3 comes after Term 2

When shapes are added

When shapes are added

  • A term-to-term rule tells you how to get from one term to the next

  • Sometimes the same number of shapes is added each time

  • In this example, 22 squares are added each time

  • So the rule is to add 22 squares

When shapes are multiplied

When shapes are multiplied

  • Sometimes the number of shapes is multiplied each time

  • In this example, the number of squares doubles each time

  • So the rule is to multiply by 22

Continue the pattern

Continue the pattern

  • Use the same rule to find the next term

  • If the rule is to add 33 squares, add 33 more squares to the last term

  • This gives the next picture in the pattern
