Using Set Notation 2

Definitions

Definitions

  • EE is the universal set. It represents all numbers in the question
  • A′A' is the complement. It means "everything that is not in A" and can be applied to any section
Example 1

Example 1

  • AA = {1,5,8} and BB = {2,3,9}, Given that EE is made up of AA and BB, find EE.
  • Here, EE is simply the numbers that are in either AA or BB.
  • These can be found and represented as {1,2,3,5,8,9}
Example 2

Example 2

  • Given EE = {1,3,4,7,8} and AA = {1,7,8}, find A′A'
  • Here, A′A' represents the numbers that are in EE, but not AA.
  • These can be found and represented as {3,4}
