Estimating Powers & Roots

We can estimate powers and roots by first estimating the number, then applying the power or root.

Example 1

Example 1

  • Estimate 4.2\sqrt{4.2}
Example 2

Example 2

  • Estimate 6.426.4^2
Example 3

Example 3

  • Estimate 8.023\sqrt[3]{8.02}
Example 4

Example 4

  • Estimate (4.03)2+3.80.47\dfrac{(4.03)^2 + \sqrt{3.8}}{0.47}
  • When estimating a number less than one, round to the nearest tenth, which in this case is 0.5.
