Properties of 3D Shapes
Identify and describe 3D shapes by counting their faces, edges, and vertices.

Parts of a 3D shape
A face is a flat surface
An edge is a line where two faces meet
A vertex is a corner where edges meet
We can describe many 3D shapes by counting their faces, edges, and vertices

Cuboid
A cuboid has 6 rectangular faces.
Faces: 6
Edges: 12
Vertices: 8

Square-based pyramid
A square-based pyramid has 1 squared face and 4 triangular faces
The triangular faces meet at the apex
Faces: 5
Edges: 8
Vertices: 5

Triangular prism
A triangular prism has a uniform triangular cross-section
It has 2 triangular faces and 3 rectangular faces
Faces: 5
Edges: 9
Vertices: 6

Flat vs curved surfaces
Some 3D shapes have curved surfaces instead of only flat faces
A sphere has 1 curved surface, 0 edges, and 0 vertices
A cylinder has 2 flat circular faces and 1 curved surface
A cylinder has 2 curved edges and 0 vertices
