The Policeman

  • Russell makes it very clear that the police use different approaches when it comes to dealing with people from different classes (favouring the elite).
    • For example, when the children are in trouble for throwing stones through windows, the Policeman first visits Mrs. Johnstone and tells her that “there’ll be no more bloody warnings from now on” (Act One), before visiting Mr. Lyons and respectfully advising him that Edward shouldn’t “mix with the likes of them in the future” (Act One).

The Judge

  • Similar to the police, the judge is supposed to represent impartial authority, but that is not the case.
  • The judge is portrayed as a humorous and unfair character as he lets Sammy off with a light sentence when Mrs. Johnstone flirts with him.
  • Again, this suggests that people in authority can’t be trusted to be impartial.

The Milkman

  • The Milkman makes two appearances in the play and is used to highlight Mrs. Johnstone’s financial situation.
  • Firstly, he appears at the start of Act One with his message of “no money, no milk” in order to show the audience just how poor the Johnstones are.
  • He appears again at the start of Act Two, this time full of joy and even taking Mrs. Johnstone out “dancing”, indicating to the audience that things have improved significantly for the Johnstone family since moving to the countryside.

Teachers

  • While Edward’s boarding school teacher and Mickey’s secondary modern school teacher seem stereotypical for their environments, both show a lack of understanding and empathy.
  • They suspend the boys for relatively insignificant offences.
  • The teachers don’t bother to understand the children and this could be a critique of the education system on the part of Willy Russell, who was himself a teacher.
