The play then moves forward by seven years and we are introduced to Mickey (the twin whom Mrs. Johnstone kept).

Sammy steals Mickey's gun

Sammy steals Mickey's gun

  • We see Mickey at his mother’s house holding a toy gun and complaining about his older brother, “Our Sammy”, who has stolen one of his toy guns.
  • Mrs. Johnstone tells Mickey that Sammy only bullies him “because you’re the youngest”. Mickey playfully pretends to shoot his mother, before explaining that they had been playing “near the big houses by the park” (where Mr. and Mrs. Lyons live).
  • Mrs. Johnstone forbids Mickey from playing in that area ever again.
