Consolidation Under Adenauer
Political Stability
Political Stability
The political system in West Germany was relatively stable between 1949 and 1963. This was due to a mixture of Adenauer's success and the constitution.
Impact of the economic miracle
Impact of the economic miracle
- The economy’s recovery provided a strong foundation for West Germany’s political stability.
- Adenauer’s regime was accredited (given credit for) with the economic miracle.
Longevity of Adenauer
Longevity of Adenauer
- Adenauer and the Christian Democratic Union succeeded in four elections.
- This indicates Adenauer’s popularity and the population’s desire for stability.
- The period between 1949 and 1963 is known as an era of ‘chancellor democracy’. This was because Adenauer had such a prominent role in policy-making.
Political parties
Political parties
- Political stability was also helped by the small number of dominant political parties.
- The CDU dominated West German politics between 1949 and 1963. Their main rival was the SDP.
- The strength of these parties prevented the Bundestag from being divided by lots of small parties (as had happened in the Weimar Republic).
Lack of opposition
Lack of opposition
- As well as this, extremist parties were banned. This included the Socialist Reich Party (a far-right party) and the Communist Party (a far-left party).
- Adenauer also absorbed right-wing parties into the CDU. This reduced opposition.
Historical assessment
Historical assessment
- Historian Martin Conway (2004) argues that the period 1945-73 was extraordinary in European history for the relative peace it brought and it's 'muted character'. He calls this period 'Western Europe's Democratic Age.'
- Conway (2004) argues that the roots of postwar democracy went deeper than simply the events of the Second World War. He thinks the type of democracy that emerged in the 1940s in Europe was the result of long term social and institutional changes.
