Key Events in Chapter 14: Briony's Police Interview

Briony is interviewed by the police that night. She accuses Robbie of being the assailant and gives Robbie’s obscene letter to the police.

In the morning, Robbie returns with the two twins but he is arrested, handcuffed and driven away in a police car.

It is significant that Briony repeats her lie, perhaps suggestive of her trying to convince herself.
It is important to note that the inspector has given her the opportunity to change her story (“Let’s forget what you know”) but that, tragically, Briony does not take it.
