Calculating Capacity Requirements

You need to know three things to be able to work out how much data can be stored within a certain capacity:

Size of data being stored

Size of data being stored

  • The bigger the size of the data being stored, the bigger capacity media will be needed.
Available capacity

Available capacity

  • The more capacity available, the more data we can store.
How to convert between the units

How to convert between the units

  • To find out if we have enough capacity, it is important to put the capacity of the media and the size of the data into the same units.

Test yourself on Calculating Capacity Requirements

  • I need to download two videos, of average size 500 MB. What is the approximate total amount of data that I will download?

  • An online video streaming service sends data at 4 MB per second. I only have 180 MB of data left. How long will I be able to watch the stream for?
