Introduction to Lexis
The core building blocks of language analysis are called the ‘levels’. Lexis is the biggest level and is all about the words used. When we are talking about the lexis of a text, we mean the words it uses.

Lexeme
- It is important to note that lexis is a plural form; the singular of which is lexeme.

Lexicon
- It is also important to note that if we’re looking at a particular set of words, we describe this as a lexicon.

Ditching 'the word'
- The framework of lexis can be broken down into a number of different categories. Once you have learned these categories, you will be expected to ditch the phrase ‘the word’ and use more precise terminology to describe lexis you are talking about.

AO1
- Your use of terminology is assessed in the examinations through Assessment Objective 1 (AO1).
